Timond Chubb, 12 years old from Smyrna
Georgia
This year, history was made for the state of Georgia and the Gazelle Track Club of Georgia. Timond Chubb, 12 years old from Smyrna Georgia and a student at Griffin Middle School, became the first Georgian athlete ever to win both the AAU and the USATF Cross Country National Championship in the same year. This feat represents about 24 years since the two agencies split. Timond is also the first Georgian athlete since at least 1976 to win the AAU Championship. Research is still underway to determine if there has ever been a winner from Georgia in either AAU or USATF. Timond’s victory comes in his fourth year of running track and field and cross country. He has been a member of Gazelle Track Club since the summer of 1999 and is coached by Michelle Braud-Lewis of Marietta and Peter Pray of Smyrna. Timond’s mother, Mavis Chubb, is the Secretary of Gazelle Track Club and works very closely with the Georgia AAU Association Chair in keeping AAU alive and well in Georgia. Hat’s off to them all on Gazelle’s 1st ever XC National Champion. We hope that this will be the first of many more to come.
Timond ran similar times at both the AAU and USATF events, 11:12.25 at Indian Ripple Park in Kettering, Ohio and 11:18.00 at the Lovelace New Mexico Soccer Complex - Bernalillo, NM (north of Albuquerque), respectively. His hard work and focus paid great dividends. He defeated some of the most well known national track and field and cross country competitors and record holders including the Duke brothers from the Motor City Track Club and Motor City Connection, and Andrew Bednarsky of Transy East in New Jersey, a 3-time national cross country champion. This means that Timond Chubb is the undisputed, Midget Boys, National Cross Country Champion. Timond was also a member of the Youth Athletics' National Championship Midget Boys 4x800m Relay in Miami, Florida in the summer of 2002. He continues to build on a long line of national champions and record holders produced by, undoubtedly, one of the best track clubs in the country and arguably, the best in the state of Georgia. Congratulations to Timond and Go Gazelle!!
