Our church was founded in 1858. The original name was Bethel
A.M.E. and was located in the north side of River Road in Fair Haven at the end of Browns Lane. Members of the church included
Anthony Quero, Edward Brown, Jacob Brown, and a Mr. Still. Many of the members lived on Browns Lane which was named after
the Brown family. Our second home was known as Fisk Chapel A.M.E. (1882-1975) named in honor
of the Civil War General Clinton Bowen Fisk (a Rumson resident) who provided the major financial support for building
both the church and a school for black children on Fisk Street in Fair Haven. Reverend J.T. Rex was the pastor at the
time of building this church. The Fisk Chapel home eventually became too small for the
congregation and in addition was in need of major structural repairs which prompted to the congregation donate it to the Borough
of Fair Haven in 1974 to make way for a new modern house of worship. Under the leadership of Reverend Mosely, in 1975 the
chapel was prepared for a move to it's current location on Cedar Avenue and dedicated as Bicentennial Hall in 1976. Our current church was completed in 1976 on the same site vacated by the current Bicentennial
Hall. With each challenge we have encountered, we have become stronger in our faith. It is fitting that our congregation
decided on an anniversary slogan from an old hymn, "We've Come This
Far By Faith."
We invite you to become a part of our church today and a piece of its history
tomorrow.
